First Aid Friday- Treatment for burns

10 Apr by Rosalind Elliott

A burn is an injury caused by heat (thermal), cold, radiation, radioactivity, electricity, friction or chemicals. Treatment is slightly different depending on the mechanism of injury. Sunburn is a type of radiation burn. This week’s reminder provides information on the treatment of thermal burns. Cold running tap water applied on the burned tissue for 20 minutes within an hour of the injury is best practice although it can have effect if applied within 3 hours. Hydrogels are OK but are not as good at stopping the burn and minimising tissue loss.
