First Aid Friday - Treatment for Blue Bottle sting

3 Apr by Rosalind Elliott

Quick reminder, ice and vinegar are ineffective first line treatments for blue bottle stings. Hot water immersion (as hot as the patient can tolerate) for 20 minutes will neutralise the toxins and reduce the sting. If after 20 minutes severe pain persists ice MAY help but will not treat the cause. Other interventions which may reduce discomfort but are not within our remit to administer include antihistamines and paracetamol (but the patient may be advised to self administer when they are able). See attached file.
