First Aid Friday - Opioid overdose

Opioids e.g., morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, heroin, and fentanyl are all related to morphine. They are used for pain relief but are also used recreationally for their euphoric effects. They can be taken orally, injected, transdermally (through the skin) or inhaled. The major concern during overdose is that opioids depress breathing. Breathing may need to be supported with an oropharyngeal airway and bag and mask ventilation until the opioid wears off. Alternatively naxolone which blocks opioids for a short time and can be given intranasally until the opioid wears off. Always check if there is a witness who has some and has authority to administer it.
