First Aid Friday - Blue Ring Octopus bite

13 Feb by Rosalind Elliott

Blue Ringed Octopus are often found in rock pools (such as those at the south end of Dee Why Beach!), and if disturbed may inflict a potentially fatal bite. The bite is not always painful, as venom may not be injected (envenomation) however even in the absence of pain and a bite mark TREAT as a medical emergency as the venom causes paralysis (including breathing muscles) and death within 30 minutes. Apply the Pressure Immobilisation Technique – compression bandages are available in the first aid room (see: “Snake Bite Bandage”).
