First Aid Friday - Treatment for severe bleeding (use of an arterial tourniquet)

An arterial tourniquet is used in the setting of severe bleeding from a limb which cannot be controlled with direct pressure. Severe bleeding should be controlled before proceeding to the airway, breathing and circulation.
There are 2 arterial tourniquets in each first aid kit and the “Major Haemorrhage” kit in the first aid room (spares are in the cupboard by the door). Patrol checks include the first aid kits and “Major Haemorrhage” kit. This ensures the equipment is available but also that everyone is familiar with the location and contents should there be an emergency.
